Shnat Mitzvah
A Year of Experience
The Shnat Mitzvah for boys and girls provides an opportunity to experience a year of meaningful personal and family activities in a pluralistic and egalitarian spirit.
The Nigun Halev community invites families of teenagers from the Emek and surrounding areas to join a year of experiential and meaningful activities that connect Israeli traditions with the renewed Hebrew culture.
Monthly meetings are held throughout the year on topics such as:
-
Adolescence
-
Jewish values
-
Challenges in Israeli society
Alongside these, participants engage in:
-
Volunteer work and community service projects
-
Excursions to explore the Land of Israel and its stories
The Shnat Mitzvah also explores questions of personal identity and the integration of Israeli and Jewish life within us, such as:
-
“What is my family story and who am I really?”
-
“What is prayer and does it have a place in secular life?”
-
How social justice connects to the Jewish narrative
-
Which traditions are passed down from generation to generation
Bar/Bat Mitzvah Ceremonies
As part of the Shnat Mitzvah, Nigun Halev offers to conduct Bar and Bat Mitzvah ceremonies.
Michel Ben Naim teaches the boys and girls to read from the Torah, study the weekly portion, and deliver a d’var Torah.
The community’s leading team works with the teen and family to create a unique ceremony that combines family spirit, Jewish cultural tradition, and the ethos of the Nigun Halev community.
Preparation includes:
-
Learning about the family generations (grandparents, parents, and children) and integrating them into the ceremony
-
Preparing a siddur and producing a celebratory booklet for the Bar/Bat Mitzvah event
Community Support
Families celebrating Shnat Mitzvah together support each other throughout the year,
forming a close-knit group that helps with the Bar/Bat Mitzvah ceremonies.
The Mitzvah group is invited to participate in various community activities such as:
-
Kabbalat Shabbat
-
Cultural evenings
