In Parashat "Vayishlach," we encounter Jacob our forefather at a defining moment in his life—his return to the Land of Israel and his tense reunion with his brother, Esau.
Jacob teaches us a life lesson across three dimensions:
Preparation: He does not rely on miracles alone. He acts through practical means: gifts (appeasement), prayer, and preparation for war.
The Internal Struggle: The nocturnal struggle with the Angel symbolizes the internal war each of us faces with our own fears and doubts. Victory comes specifically through direct confrontation.
Transformation: Following the struggle, Jacob’s name is changed to "Israel"—one who has striven with the Divine and with men and has prevailed.
The Message for Us:

Even when we stand before challenges that seem intimidating (like Esau), we must act with a combination of practical effort and deep faith. Our struggles are what build our identity and earn us the name "Israel"—a people capable of overcoming any hardship.
Wishing you a blessed and peaceful Shabbat!
